Fair Trade in Havant Borough |
Havant Fairtrade Forum has been in existance and meeting regularly since 2004. We are a local steering group promoting Fairtrade in Havant.
Our aims are to raise awareness of Fairtrade, encourage more people to use Fairtrade goods, and more retailers and catering establishments to sell them. We seek to promote Fairtrade in community organisations and workplaces of the borough.
Working Towards Official Fairtrade Status
We are also working towards Fairtrade status for the Borough of Havant. In order to do this we need to achieve a number of goals. Havant Borough Council has already passed a resolution supporting the campaign. If enough shops, cafes and community groups use Fairtrade products we can apply for Fairtrade Borough status. We are close to our target but need a few more! If you are aware of any place that offers Fairtrade goods, either exclusively or alongside non-Fairtrade brands, we would be very glad to hear from you. This is not restricted to places where Fairtrade goods are sold. If, for example, your workplace uses Fairtrade tea and coffee in the staff room, we would like to know about it.
Check out our progress so far, and how you can get involved.
What is Fairtrade?
Farmers and plantation workers who produce crops like tea, coffee, cocoa and fruit are among the poorest people in the world and often exploited. Fairtrade aims to change that. The Fairtrade mark on a product guarantees that the producer has been paid a fair price plus a small extra premium for projects in the community. The mark is an independent consumer label which shows that international standards have been reached. Simply by making a choice to buy Fairtrade products you can make a real difference to the lives of people across the world. Fairtrade is not charity or aid, it is simply about empowering communities to buid their own successful futures.
There are now well over 2,500 different products ranging from fruit and nuts to spices and cotton products. A wide and increasing range of Fairtrade goods are available in a growing number of retail outlets in the borough.
